BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT

May 21, 2012

Dear Parents,

This week, Sophomore English students will continue their research papers.  Sophomore Honors students will continue their study of Walt Whitman.

IMPORTANT:  The school literary magazine is asking for submissions of photography, poetry and short stories.  Please encourage your son/daughter to share his/her talent with the school community.

Please be aware that I work on a point system for grading.  The average may appear to fluctuate quite considerably because of this way of registering grades.  Note that performing poorly on an assignment worth only 5 points is far less serious than failing an assignment that is worth 20 points.

From time to time, I will be announcing local, state and national competitions.  Please encourage your son/daughter to enter these contests.  Information is available on the "Contests" page of this site.

Last year, I came across this article that you might find interesting.  It's about how poetry can help the beleaguered parent.  Here is the url: <http://www.poetryfoundation.org/journal/article.html?id=239194>.

In the past, some parents requested a copy of the College Board's 101 Books Every High School Student Should Know.  Here is the web address for that list:

I also highly recommend the following resources for style and grammar:

William Strunk and E.B. White's Elements of Style

William Zinsser's On Writing Well

Best wishes,

Ms. McDonald
