JOB DESCRIPTION:
INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE SPECIAL EDUCATION


QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Possesses valid New Jersey teaching certificate, certification as Teacher of the Handicapped, or Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (Preferred).
  2. Holds Bachelor's Degree (Preferred).
  3. Possesses valid County Substitute Certificate (Required).
  4. Demonstrates skill in both written and oral communications and human relations.
  5. Successfully completes required criminal history check and has proof of U.S. Citizenship or legal resident alien status.
  6. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Director of Special Services or designated administrator

JOB GOALS:
  1. To maximize the total implementation of each student’s Individualized Educational Program (IEP).
  2. To increase the quantity and quality of time devoted to individualized instruction of each student.
  3. To provide for continuity in instructional programs when the teacher is not present.
  4. To increase the special education teacher’s effectiveness in crisis intervention for those disabled students who are experiencing particular problems.
  5. To provide for increased consultation between special education teacher and regular classroom teachers.
  6. To increase the variety and quantity of teacher-made instructional materials.
  7. To promote the inclusion of children with disabilities in the least restrictive environment.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Instruction:

  1. Assists the classroom teacher in the delivery of an effective instructional program.
  2. Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce the learning of information or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  3. Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  4. Helps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the classroom teacher.
  5. Instructs students in the use of self-paced or automatic programs and monitors student progress in such programs.
  6. Carries out, under the supervision of the special education teacher, student programs which involve drill, timing, the use of instructional games, technology, and other appropriate techniques and materials.
  7. Assists the special education teacher in providing individualized instruction to each disabled student in order to meet the objectives contained in each child’s IEP in the following areas: reading, computation, visual/auditory perception, language development, psycho-motor training, etc.
  8. Performs routine clerical tasks as assigned.
  9. Prepares, compiles, and makes copies of instructional materials as per teacher directive.
  10. Accompanies teacher and students on class trips.
  11. Assists special area teachers with the instructional program as needed.

B. Instructional Planning:
  1. Assists the teacher in designing strategies to reinforce knowledge or skills which meet the individual needs of students.
  2. Assists the teacher in maintaining an inventory, organizing educational materials, preparing instructional documents, and other activities which facilitate the educational program.
  3. Processes student paperwork in accordance with the directions of the teacher.
  4. Assists the teacher in organizing the classroom for instruction.

C. Student Management:
  1. Supports the teacher in maintaining a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the needs and interests of the students.
  2. Maintains student conduct in situations assigned by the principal in accordance with the contractual agreement.
  3. Provides instructional assistance to students in proper toilet training and assists in bathroom needs, as appropriate.
  4. Contributes to management and modification of students’ behavior within and outside the classroom.
  5. Helps maintain order and discipline and assists in managing the behavior of students, including but not limited to crisis intervention.
  6. Participates in restraining disruptive or dangerous physical behavior as requested and assigned.
  7. Provides assistance to students with physical disabilities which may involve transferring to and from wheelchairs to floor, table, or therapy devices.

D. Professional Development:
  1. Strives to maintain and enhance professional competence through professional reading as well as participation in workshops, conferences and appropriate staff development programs in accordance with district guidelines.
  2. Attends staff meetings as required by contract.
  3. Serves on staff committees on a voluntary basis.

E. School/Community Relations
  1. Cooperates and shares professionally with other members of the staff.
  2. Maintains confidentiality about students in accordance with state and federal law as well as district policy.
F. Other Assigned Duties
  1. Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the Director of Special Services or designated administrator may assign.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten-month year. Salary established in the Agreement between the Holmdel Township Board of Education and the Holmdel Township Education Association.

EVALUATION: Performance of the position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the agreement between the Holmdel Township Board of Education and the Holmdel Township Education Association.
