New Jersey Science News
The Commissioner of Education for the State of
New Jersey recently announced that New Jersey has
joined with nineteen other states to develop a new set
of common standards for science. Participating states
span the country, from California and Arizona to
Michigan and Maryland. They will help craft what have
been dubbed the Next Generation Science Standards
(NGSS) and will be based on a framework developed by a
panel of the National Research Council earlier this
summer. Titled A Framework
for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting
Concepts, and Core Ideas, this document can be
accessed at
http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=13165.
The new standards are expected to be completed before
the end of 2012. The NRC's framework for the new
standards is built around three major dimensions:
scientific and engineering practices; cross-cutting
concepts that unify the study of science and
engineering; and core ideas in four disciplinary
areas—physical sciences; life sciences; earth and
space sciences; and engineering, technology, and the
applications of science. The states will also work
directly with a team of 41 writers who include science
teachers at the elementary and secondary level,
specialists on state standards, academics, and others.
Competition Results
On Saturday November 19, four Holmdel High School
students: Daway C, Jeffrey L, Bowen L, and Ken H
participated in the Joseph A. Andrushkiw Mathematics
Competition at Seton Hall University. Although they
regularly compete in the Shore Math League, these
students participated independently in this
prestigious event. As a team they placed first out of
16 schools. Jeffrey L also placed first out of 180
students individually. For winning the team
competition, a plaque will be sent to Holmdel High
School.
In the first contest of the New Jersey Math League
1011-1012 season, Holmdel was one of six teams in the
state to achieve a perfect score. In addition, eight
Holmdel students achieved a perfect score.
The first meet of the Shore Math League, sponsored by
Mr. Lewis, was held on 9/26/11. Holmdel finished 2nd
out of 18 schools in the county (just behind High Tech
HS). October’s Shore Math League results put Holmdel’s
team in second place in a tie with Manalapan.
Eight Satz students participated in the Brother
Christian Jones Mathematics Contest at Christian
Brothers Academy On October 15, 2011. The team placed
3rd in the public schools division. Jarrett L placed sixth overall and best in school. The Satz
Academic Competitions sponsor is Mrs. Marian Amitrani.
The Siemens Foundation released the shortlist of
students who will contend for the highest science
honor awarded to American high school students.
Ninety‐six students from 21 states were named Regional
Finalists in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science
& Technology. Daway C, a Holmdel Senior,
working with Dr. Josephine Blaha, submitted a paper,
Identifying Heat Induced Failure Mechanisms in Yttria-stabilized
Zirconia Thermal Barrier Coatings, and has been
selected one of approximately 300 national
semifinalists in this prestigious competition.
Awards
Dr. Josephine Blaha applied for and was awarded about
$1500 from the American Chemical Society Hach
Foundation, and was able to purchase glassware to be
used towards Biodiesel Synthesis in the High School
Lab. The ACS-Hach High School Chemistry Grant is
awarded to U.S. high school chemistry teachers seeking
funds to support ideas that transform classroom
learning, foster student development, and reveal the
wonders of chemistry. Teachers can request up to
$1,500 for their
ideas.
Jen Flynn and the science teachers at Satz were
awarded a HFEE Grant to purchase a 30 seat license for
the Satz Cybercenter to install, “The Layered Earth”
software program,
www.thelayeredearth.com. This is an
interactive/simulation program to enrich the earth
science curriculum for both 7th and 8th grades.
HHS students competed in the National Science
League receiving first place in biology, 4th place
in chemistry and 6th place in physics.
