SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT

2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR

Directions:

All students will read the book assigned to the grade level they are entering.  Students must be finished reading the book and prepared to discuss it on the first day of school.

*Required Reading for incoming

9^th GRADE STUDENTS:  The Body of Christopher of Creed by Carol Plum-Ucci

10^th GRADE STUDENTS: The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien 

11^th GRADE STUDENTS:  A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Husseini

12^th GRADE STUDENTS:  The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart

Honors classes may be required to read additional books.

The Assessment:

• The summer reading assessment will enable students to show their understanding of the assigned book but will not require them to create a book report or plot summary.  This assessment will count for 5% of the first marking period grade.

• This will be a uniform assessment, given by each English teacher, at the start of school in September. The assessment will be written in class and will serve as a diagnostic writing sample, as well as an indication of a student’s comprehension and analysis of the work.  Students will respond to focused questions, created by the teachers on each grade level.

• The summer reading book will also be used in other assignments throughout the school year.

*The AP Summer Reading requirement will be determined by the AP teacher.
