GUIDELINES FOR WRITING A LETTER TO YOURSELF

·        Avoid asking yourself a lot of questions. ex. Do you have kids? Write as if you are writing in a diary.

·        Talk about things that you are into: skateboarding, playing the clarinet, playing cards, spending mega hours on the internet

·        Describe your worst feature, best feature

·        Tell yourself who your best friends are, what your favorite shows are, your favorite dinner, the vegetables you hate, your favorite song, album, artist

·        Remind your thirty-two year counter-part the relationship you have with your siblings, parents, cousins. The more detail the better. Even the color of a carpet or curtain or bedspread will create a smile on yourself 20 years from now.

·        Talk about your pets (remember, they will be long dead by the time you read this 20 years from now.)

·        Tell yourself what you envision at the age of thirty-two. Married? Children? In good shape? College graduate? Professional? Mother of six? A TV star?

·        Tell yourself what you won't do as a parent. What you will do as a parent.

·        Share your plans with yourself. You want what kind of car? What kind of house? What college?

·        What are your fears? Are you afraid you might not be as successful as you envision? Are you afraid that life will be less enjoyable in the future? Do you fear war?

·        Describe your idea of the perfect spouse.

These are just ideas. Be aware that at thirty-two, most people begin to show signs of age, start to gain aches and pains in their bodies, and many stop being physically active. It is also a highpoint in careers and when people have started families. It is a great time in one's life. And, many detailed memories of being twelve are lost. Keep them fresh for yourself through this letter. You will thank yourself for it.
