Interactive Display Technologies are Taking Over Indian Hill School

This year fifth and sixth-grade math and social studies classrooms received additional technologies to enhance their students' interaction and classroom learning experience. In Ms. Bennett’s 5th grade math classroom, her goal is to get more of the students thinking, and thinking for longer periods, within the context of the curriculum. “In this type of learning, the students are encouraged to collaborate on a problem, develop strategies for problem-solving, and record on the vertical whiteboards for each other to see.” She feels this leads to longer and deeper learning and is based on a Building Thinking Classroom model. Also, Mrs. Vaccarino’s 5th-grade social studies class has been using the Promethean board, which she feels has revolutionized her teaching and student learning. “My students are engaged with all of the interactive features and are actively participating in the daily lessons.” This type of environment has enhanced student engagement and learning in so many ways. 

These interactive display technologies support our school and district mission and vision. Collaboration is essential to learning. Students in Mrs. DaSilva's class collaborate with peers on meaningful math tasks using whiteboard space posted on the walls and tables. “The additional whiteboard space in my classroom has upped the level of engagement in my classes! My students are more likely to discuss their ideas with one another, persist through tough problems, and share ideas with other groups using our added whiteboard surfaces.” This collaborative whiteboard space allows students to test ideas, strategize, and visualize their thinking more than they would be able to on traditional paper.

Overall, our school made meaningful investments that support personalized learning and enhance collaboration. Mr. Silvestro’s 6th-grade math classes recently reviewed for a percent quiz by making a brain dump with his boards. The students were to throw any knowledge of the topic on the boards and discuss with their classmates their information. These interactive boards empower teachers and increase student engagement in the classroom. “We are so very grateful and excited for this technology upgrade! We now can monitor all scholars' work during the lesson rather than just those close to us with antiquated desk cameras. I have them use the technology and teach the class their way of thinking! It's been fantastic! Thanks again for investing in this generation's educational experience!” In the end, students and teachers are enjoying all these new technologies, which have taken their classroom activities to the next level.
