MESSAGE FROM TRANSPORTATION

Boarding of School Buses

Parents are restricted from boarding any Holmdel school bus; this includes any bus contracted to provide services to the Holmdel Township Board of Education. Only enrolled and eligible public and private school students and parents serving as chaperones and/or authorized school personnel are allowed on buses.

This rule will be enforced. Bus drivers and monitors have been instructed to enforce this regulation.

Q: My child has special needs. Who do I contact to make arrangements to get my child picked up?	A: Contact our department at 732-946-1832 x3435 or x2472.
Q: Why does my bus come so early?	A: It is quite a challenge trying to coordinate the schedules for more than 30 buses and nearly 4,000 students. Bus routes are run to be as efficiently as possible. Student loads and the distance to the school are only two of the factors that go into determining the routes and start times. The school's start time is another factor.
Q: Why can't the bus stop in front of my house?	A: The overwhelming consideration in determining the location of bus stops is the safety of our students. Certain situations, such as sharp curves in a road, are avoided so drivers will have a clear view of a stopped bus and will be able to stop in time. Stops are placed in locations where they will provide a safe and convenient location for the most students while helping us route our buses in the most efficient manner possible.
Q: Who do I contact if I have a question about a bus stop or route?	A: If you have concerns regarding the location of your child's bus stop or any other questions about a bus stop (time, etc.), please contact the Transportation Coordinator, Nicole Collins, 732-946-1832 x3425 or x2472.

Safety First! Tips for Parents & Riders

When students step off the bus and need to cross the road to get to their homes, please allow the bus driver to direct the students. The child should wait on the sidewalk in front of the bus so the driver can see their face and wait for the driver to motion for the student to cross. The driver has a clear view of the surroundings and has worked with all riders regarding safety procedures.
When students are waiting for the bus, they should stand clear of the road. Wait on sidewalks or curb.
All articles that students carry on the bus should be secured in backpacks or bags.
Students are taught to NOT pick up items they drop in front of a bus.
Large items such as school projects, beanbags, and sleeping bags should be taken to school by parents.
Space is not available on the bus and the child may have difficulty managing large items.
At all railroad crossings, students must be silent to ensure the driver can hear trains.

Rules for Riding the Bus
For the sake of your child's safety and others, please make sure your child is aware of the rules.

Fighting, wrestling, or boisterous activity is prohibited on the bus.
Pupils shall use the emergency door only in case of emergency.
Pupils shall be on time for the bus both morning and evening.
Pupils shall not bring animals, except approved assistance guide animals, weapons, or other potentially hazardous material on the bus.
Pupils shall remain seated while the bus is in motion.
Pupils may be assigned seats by the driver.
When necessary to cross the road, pupils shall cross in front of the bus or as instructed by the driver.
Pupils shall not extend their hands, arms, or heads through bus windows.
Pupils shall converse in normal tones; loud or vulgar language is prohibited.
Pupils shall not open or close windows without permission of the bus driver.
Pupils shall keep the bus clean and refrain from damaging it.
Pupils shall be courteous to the driver, to fellow pupils and passersby.
Pupils who refuse to obey the regulations may forfeit their privilege to ride on the buses.
